SC Connecting People to Services (3)

The Problem:
Parents of children with disabilities and self-advocates often want to make change but may not know how to work with legislators or navigate complex service systems. South Carolina needed to engage more people in the Partners in Policymaking program to build advocacy skills and strengthen a statewide network of disability advocates.

Action:
Graduates of Partners in Policymaking help connect people with services and opportunities to advocate. They volunteer at conferences and community events, host outreach tables, and serve as speakers and panelists. By sharing their personal experiences, graduates help parents, self-advocates, caregivers, and professionals better understand how to navigate disability services and become effective advocates.

Results:
Graduates are taking on leadership roles across the state. Fifteen Fifteen recent graduates now serve on boards and commissions, helping represent the disability community. Five parents started businesses or nonprofits to teach others how to navigate services and build new resources. Ten graduates have presented at conferences and 16 have supported conference events, expanding outreach and advocacy skills across South Carolina.

Unique Role of the Council:
The Council builds leadership and creates opportunities for graduates to serve on boards, commissions, and community initiatives—ensuring the voices of people with disabilities shape policies, services, and systems.
