The Problem:
Compared to other states, Florida has the highest percentage of people waiting for Medicaid Home- and Community-Based Waiver services. This project addresses aging caregivers, an aging population of adults with I/DD, and a significant shortfall of long-term care funding, both individually and collectively, which are of imminent concern for individuals with I/DD and family caregivers.
Action:
The AGEDD project convened and supported local Communities of Practice (CoPs) representative of 19 counties across the state in building knowledge and fostering working relationships between the Aging and I/DD Networks. Technical assistance was provided based on each CoPs’ interests, needs, and requests. 64 individuals from both networks representing 39 different organizations participated. The intent was to build capacity for increasing access to services and supports at the local level.
Results:
Stronger working relationships and increased knowledge about each other’s programs led to a total of 103 referrals that consisted of the following services in 2025: Congregate meals, transportation, guardianship, respite, housing, health services, funding for care, home care, eligibility services, and support coordination. Numerous examples of individuals with I/DD having greater access to community opportunities afforded through the Aging Network were also reported.
Unique role of the Council:
The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council is highly respected by other agencies and organizations and has a history of implementing successful projects that require collaborative relationships.
