WI Connecting People to Services (9)

The Problem
Many families don’t know what services are available or how to access them. In Wisconsin, data showed families often feel lost trying to navigate complex systems. The Council recognized that families trust and learn best from others with lived experience—but those connections were not always in place.

Action
The Council partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to fund community-based organizations (CBOs) led by people with lived experience. These organizations provide one-on-one support and host gatherings where families can learn, ask questions, and connect with others. Through this approach, families get clear information and build trusted support networks.

Results
The impact has been strong. Ninety-three percent of families say they better understand available services, and 100% report feeling more connected and supported. One mother, unsure how to enroll her child with a disability in school, received guidance from a CBO. With support, she enrolled her child in kindergarten and was able to return to work, improving her family’s stability. Due to these results, DPI increased its investment from $60,000 to $200,000.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council understands that peer support works. By investing in community organizations led by people with lived experience, the Council helps families build trust, navigate systems, and access services—leading to stronger outcomes for children and families.
