NJ Connecting People to Services (15)

The Problem
People with developmental disabilities and their families rarely have the chance to speak directly with state leaders. Without these connections, decision-makers may miss important perspectives, and policies may not fully reflect real-life experiences.

Action
The Council created a direct connection between community members and state leadership by inviting the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Dr. Stephen Cha, to a public meeting. Along with the Deputy Commissioner, he attended, spoke with participants, and listened to their experiences and concerns.

Results
The meeting brought together about 70 people, both in person and online. Attendees heard directly from state leadership and had the opportunity to share their own experiences. Personal conversations helped build understanding and trust, giving leaders a clearer picture of the challenges people face and strengthening relationships between the community and government.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council serves as a bridge between people with lived experience and state leaders. By creating space for real conversations, the Council ensures that policies and decisions are informed by the voices of those most affected.
