AK Employment

The Problem
Alaska faces a shrinking workforce and a major employment gap for people with disabilities. While jobs are available, many young people with disabilities are not prepared or supported to enter the workforce. Families and youth also face confusion, stigma, and a lack of clear information about transition services and employment options.

Action
The Council partnered with Stone Soup Group and other statewide leaders to break down complex transition information into a series of easy-to-understand webinars. These sessions covered key topics like IEPs, pre-employment transition services, and employment pathways. By working with over 15 presenters—including self-advocates—the project delivered clear, practical information to youth and families across Alaska.

Results
More than 50 participants joined live sessions, and many more accessed recorded content through statewide networks. The project strengthened partnerships, expanded outreach, and increased awareness of employment opportunities and supports. Families and youth now have better tools to plan for the future and move toward employment and independence.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council brings a strong platform and trusted voice to this work. By elevating self-advocates and partnering across systems, the Council ensures information is accurate, inclusive, and widely shared—helping shift expectations and improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities.
