The Problem
People with developmental disabilities want to speak up about issues that affect their lives—but many don’t have access to training or opportunities to build advocacy skills. Without these tools, their voices are often missing from decisions that impact them.

Action
The Council partnered with and supported People on the Go Maryland (POG), a statewide self-advocacy group led by people with developmental disabilities. Through training, technical assistance, and collaboration, POG helps individuals build skills in leadership, communication, and advocacy. Together, the Council and POG also educate legislators, host DD Day at the Legislature, and create opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in policymaking.

Results
More Marylanders with developmental disabilities are now confident advocates and leaders. Eighty-eight percent of participants say they advocate more after attending POG training. Each year, POG and the Council reach all 188 members of the Maryland General Assembly, ensuring lawmakers hear directly from people with lived experience. This has helped strengthen policies and practices that impact the disability community.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council understands the power of self-advocacy because it is led by people with disabilities and families. By investing in leadership and amplifying real voices, the Council helps ensure people with developmental disabilities are heard, respected, and involved in decisions that shape their lives.
