The Problem
Many people with developmental disabilities (DD) and their families want more information about housing choices. A survey found that housing is a major need for people with DD in New York.

What Happened
The New York State Council on Developmental Disabilities (CDD) worked with the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation (the Alliance) to create a website providing information on uncertified housing options for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

The Alliance also:

  • Created a plain-language housing guide to help people use the website.
  • Hosted podcasts about housing.
  • Gave presentations at community events.
  • Tested the website with people with DD and family members and made improvements based on their feedback.

Results
In Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2025:

  • 260 people with DD took part in project activities.
  • 288 family members took part in project activities.
  • 6,215 other community members and stakeholders participated.

More than 12,000 people have visited the website so far, and the number continues to grow.

Why the Council’s Role Was Important
When developing its 2022–2026 State Plan, the CDD heard from people with DD, families, and community members that housing was a major priority. Based on this feedback and other data, the CDD made housing a focus area and launched several housing-related projects, including this one.
