The Problem
Many people with I/DD and their families don’t know what services and supports are available to them. Important state resources can be hard to find or understand, delaying access to help and limiting opportunities for support.
Action
Regional Family Support Planning Council (RFSPC) #1 created opportunities for families to learn directly from state leaders. They hosted two virtual events featuring experts who explained available services and answered questions in real time. These sessions focused on practical information families could use right away and created a space for open conversation.
Results
The events reached families across New Jersey, including many who had not previously connected with the Council. 84 participants gained clear, helpful information and were able to ask questions specific to their needs. Families reported learning new resources and feeling more confident navigating services. The events also helped expand outreach to younger families who are earlier in their journey. One participant shared, “Great & knowledgeable speaker. Great opportunity to learn and ask questions with specific answers and offers to send additional information following the meeting.”
Unique Role of the Council
RFSPCs are trusted because they are led by families and grounded in lived experience. Their peer-to-peer approach makes information more relatable and accessible, helping families feel comfortable, informed, and ready to take the next step in accessing services.
