The Problem
People with developmental disabilities are at greater risk of poor oral health and untreated dental problems. Many have difficulty finding dentists who are willing and prepared to provide care, and some need support with daily oral hygiene activities such as brushing and flossing. Without proper support, oral health problems can lead to pain, infection, and other health complications.
Action
The Council partnered with the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority to incorporate oral health content into a new training curriculum for direct support professionals and caregivers. The Council provided expertise on the unique oral health needs of people with developmental disabilities. It recommended key topics, including finding qualified dental providers, supporting daily oral care, understanding health care rights, and accessing community resources. The Council also reviewed and strengthened the curriculum before its launch.
Impact
The training launched in May 2026 and is helping to build a workforce better prepared to support the oral health needs of people with developmental disabilities. As more direct support professionals and caregivers complete the training, people with disabilities will benefit from improved support in finding dental care, maintaining good oral hygiene, and preventing serious dental problems. The Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority will track outcomes and measure the training’s long-term impact.
Unique Role of the Council
The Council’s research, expertise, and leadership on dental care for people with developmental disabilities made it a trusted resource for developing this training. By bringing disability-specific knowledge into the curriculum, the Council helped ensure that future direct support professionals and caregivers are equipped to provide more effective, informed support.
