The Problem
Disasters can create extra challenges for people with disabilities. Emergency plans must consider accessible communication, transportation, evacuation, shelter, medications, mobility equipment, and other supports. Without preparation, people with disabilities may face greater risks during emergencies.

Action
The Council brought together emergency management and disability partners to update Alaska’s Get Ready! Emergency Preparedness Toolkit for people with disabilities. The revised toolkit was published online, printed copies were produced, and the Council led statewide distribution efforts. The updated toolkit was also incorporated into emergency preparedness trainings and presentations.

Impact
More Alaskans with disabilities now have access to practical tools and information to prepare for emergencies. Over 1,000 printed toolkits were distributed through trainings, community events, partner organizations, and direct requests from the public. Presentations reached more than 150 participants and helped individuals and families develop emergency plans, assemble home and go kits, and improve their readiness for disasters.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council leads the Alaska Disability Advisory Group on Emergency Preparedness, bringing together emergency managers and disability advocates to identify needs, improve planning, and ensure emergency resources are accessible and responsive to people with disabilities.
