Hawaii Employment

When Ethan was in high school, he loved computers and wanted a real job, but his family feared he would lose his SSI and Medicaid if he worked. His teachers told him to “be careful,” and he assumed his disability meant he would never earn a living wage.

Through the Council’s Benefits Planning – Financing the Future initiative, Ethan and his family learned exactly how work incentives function, how earnings interact with ABLE accounts, and how he could keep essential health coverage while working. For the first time, Ethan saw a future where he could work without losing stability.

At the same time, Hawaiʻi’s repeal of subminimum wage meant Ethan would no longer be forced into low-pay, segregated jobs. He applied at a local IT shop, was hired at minimum wage plus tips, and proudly opened his ABLE account to save for certifications.

He said, “Before, I thought work was dangerous for me. Now I know it’s possible, and worth it.”

His mother shared, “This changed his whole path.”
