Oklahoma Caregiving

The problem:

Caregivers of people with developmental disabilities face chronic stress, limited respite options, and difficulty navigating complex systems. Many lack time, support, or clear information about available services, leaving families overwhelmed and isolated. These gaps reduce caregiver well-being and limit opportunities for people with I/DD to thrive.

Action:

The Council partnered with Sooner SUCCESS to deliver regional caregiver retreats and sibling camps, provide respite vouchers, and offer individualized service navigation. Staff coordinated venues, volunteers, and activities; expanded outreach through a statewide interest form; and ensured all participants and waitlisted families received resources, guidance, and connections to respite and community supports.

Results:

The initiative provided respite to 113 caregivers and supported 135 siblings through retreats and sibling camps. The statewide interest form generated 273 submissions. Caregivers reported reduced stress, greater confidence in navigating services, and readiness to pursue respite. Families described the retreats as “life-changing” and their first meaningful break in years.

Unique role of the Council:

The Council’s statewide role and cross-agency partnerships positioned it to elevate caregiver needs, fund innovative respite supports, and align partners to strengthen long-term systems for families.
