CA Connecting People to Services (13)

The Problem
California’s service system for people with I/DD is complex and hard to navigate—even for professionals. Many service providers, first responders, and medical staff don’t know what supports are available or how to connect people to them. This can lead to delays, confusion, and unsafe or inappropriate responses.

Action
The Council provides ongoing, practical training to professionals across the state. These sessions often include people with disabilities as co-presenters, giving real-world insight and building understanding. Trainings focus on how to communicate effectively, make appropriate referrals, and connect individuals to the right services quickly and safely.

Results
The Council delivers about 20 trainings each month, reaching an average of 230 professionals. Participants—from healthcare, public safety, and justice systems—gain knowledge, tools, and direct connections to resources. Many report increased confidence and frequently request additional training, showing strong demand and value.

Unique Role of the Council
As an independent state agency, the Council provides trusted, unbiased expertise on disability and service systems. By combining lived experience with professional training, the Council helps improve responses, strengthen service connections, and ensure people with I/DD receive the right support at the right time.
