MS Connecting People to Services (8)

The Problem
Many families don’t know when or how to start planning for life after school. They often miss key information about transition services and available supports in Mississippi. This leads to delayed planning, missed opportunities, and weaker outcomes in education, employment, and independent living for people with IDD.

Action
The Council partnered with Mississippi State University to host a statewide training event focused on transition planning. The event brought together families, self-advocates, service providers, and experts in one place. Participants learned about available services, connected with resources, and gained practical tools to plan for adulthood and long-term success.

Results
About 125 people attended and left with a clearer understanding of transition services and next steps. Families reported feeling more confident in advocating for inclusive education, employment opportunities, and adult supports. Many made direct connections with providers, helping them take immediate action toward greater independence and community inclusion.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council played a key role in bringing people and information together. By connecting families, experts, and providers, the Council helped turn complex systems into clear, actionable steps that support lifelong planning and better outcomes for individuals with IDD.
