The Problem
Parents of young children with disabilities often struggle to find the right services and supports. Information is hard to access, outdated, or too complex. Many families feel overwhelmed trying to navigate early intervention, therapy, childcare, and education systems, making it harder for their children to get what they need.
Action
The Council funded the Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living to support families through the Community Inclusion for Young Children project. Families received clear information, one-on-one guidance, and group support on topics like early intervention, IEPs, therapy services, medical care, and inclusive childcare. Parent-to-parent mentoring helped families learn from others with shared experiences.
Results
Over the past year, 117 families received support to better access services and advocate for their children. In 2026, an additional 28 families have already been reached. Families report feeling more confident, informed, and connected. They are better able to find resources, navigate systems, and create more inclusive opportunities for their children.
Unique Role of the Council
The Council listens to families and responds to real needs. By partnering with trusted community organizations, the Council helps ensure families get practical support that improves access, inclusion, and outcomes for young children with disabilities.
