The Problem
People with disabilities often lack the tools and support to make their own decisions. Without these skills and protections, they are more at risk for abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and may lose control over important parts of their lives.

Action
The Council worked to build decision-making skills by supporting youth with disabilities to learn, lead, and advocate. They strengthened a statewide coalition, educated legislators, and supported a dedicated coordinator to develop tools, trainings, and outreach. Youth ambassadors played a key role by sharing their experiences and helping others understand the importance of self-determination.

Results
A total of 138 families—including 75 individuals with IDD—received education and support. Youth leaders became more engaged, with one ambassador helping recruit additional youth to expand the effort. Participants gained knowledge, confidence, and skills to make informed decisions and advocate for themselves.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council centers leadership by people with disabilities. By empowering youth and connecting families, advocates, and policymakers, the Council is helping ensure individuals can make their own choices and live safer, more independent lives.
