TX Well Being, Individual Rights and Safety

The Problem
Texas has hundreds of leadership positions on boards and commissions, including 250—300 with community seats, but people with disabilities are often not represented. Many potential advocates don’t know about these opportunities or lack the training and support to pursue them. As a result, important decisions are made without the voices of those directly impacted.

Action
The Council built a clear pathway to leadership. They expanded outreach, developed training resources, and created multiple ways for advocates to get involved—through self-paced learning, coaching, networking, and targeted training like the “Seek, Secure, and Serve” series. These efforts help individuals understand how to apply for and succeed in leadership roles across the state.

Results
Advocates are stepping into leadership. Multiple participants secured roles on boards, commissions, and community organizations across Texas—including positions in local government, school boards, and statewide advocacy groups. The Council’s growing network, reaching nearly 20,000 people continues to connect more individuals to opportunities and build a pipeline of informed leaders.

Unique Role of the Council
The Council serves as a central connector for leadership opportunities. With a strong statewide network and ongoing support, the Council helps individuals move from interest to action—ensuring people with disabilities are represented where decisions are made.
