The Problem
People with disabilities often don’t fully understand their rights—or may have their rights limited by others. Without clear information, individuals may not be able to make choices, speak up, or protect themselves. This can lead to less independence, fewer opportunities, and increased risk of harm.
Action
The Council created easy-to-use “Let’s Talk About Rights” guides for self-advocates, families, and providers. These guides cover 17 key rights areas and help people understand how to apply their rights in everyday life—like managing money, getting a job, or making personal decisions. The Council also developed a “Know Your Rights” video series led by a self-advocate, making the information more engaging and relatable.
Results
The project reached thousands of people. Over 4,300 guides were shared, and more than 100 participants completed training sessions—with 85% saying the guides were better than previous materials. The video series has been viewed over 15,800 times. Participants report feeling more confident speaking up and making decisions. Families also gained tools to better support their loved ones’ independence and rights.
Unique Role of the Council
The Council brought together self-advocates, families, providers, and policymakers to create tools that are practical and widely used. By embedding this work into the long-term care system, the Council is helping ensure people with disabilities understand and exercise their rights every day.
