Caregiving Texas

The Problem:
People with developmental disabilities (DD) are living longer than in previous generations. As they age, they often face new health, financial, and support needs. At the same time, many family caregivers are also aging and need additional resources and support. Texas service systems must be better prepared to meet the growing needs of older adults with DD and their caregivers by providing practical information, training, and connections to services.

Action:
Through partnerships with community organizations, this project provided training on financial skills, tax preparation, utility assistance, and independent living. The project, coordinated by the Alamo Area Council of Governments, also developed educational videos and a downloadable booklet to help people with DD and their caregivers organize and share important information with doctors, service providers, and others involved in their care.

Results:
Over five years, more than 2,200 people with DD and more than 2,400 family members and caregivers participated in project activities. Caregivers reported increased confidence and knowledge in supporting their loved ones and in finding help for themselves. Participants also gained practical skills and support to manage the financial, emotional, and health challenges that can come with aging.

Unique Role of the Council:
The Council brought personal experience in caregiving for aging adults with DD and strong partnerships with area agencies on aging, as well as public and nonprofit organizations that serve people with DD and their families.
