The Problem
People with developmental disabilities often face significant barriers to getting dental care. Council research found that these challenges were not being addressed through any coordinated effort. Dental and disability organizations were working on related issues. Still, there was no shared space for stakeholders to come together, exchange information, and focus on improving access to dental care for people with developmental disabilities.
Action
In 2024, the Council launched the Dental Information Exchange to bring together dental professionals, disability advocates, service providers, researchers, and other stakeholders. The Council designed the group as a forum for learning and collaboration, allowing participants with different perspectives to share information, identify challenges, and explore opportunities for improvement. The Council continues to lead and facilitate quarterly meetings based on priorities identified by participants.
Impact
The Dental Information Exchange has built new connections and increased collaboration among stakeholders working to improve access to dental care. More than 75 individuals have participated, with an average of 27 people attending each quarterly meeting. Survey results show that participants gained knowledge, increased their commitment to improving dental care, and took action as a result of their involvement. Participants reported forming new partnerships, sharing information with others, and developing or launching new efforts to address barriers to dental care for people with developmental disabilities.
Unique Role of the Council
The Council identified this unmet need through its research and used its expertise and relationships to bring together stakeholders who had not previously collaborated on this issue. By creating and facilitating the Dental Information Exchange, the Council established an ongoing forum to improve access to dental care for people with developmental disabilities.
